Predicting SC Acoustic Tests Using the Boundary Element Method
Introduction
This paper focuses on how to effectively predict random acceleration spectra experienced during spacecraft (S/C) acoustic qualification tests representing the acoustic environment at launch by using a fully coupled boundary element model (BEM).
Firstly, the methodology to establish a BEM based on an existing finite element model (FEM) already used for the structural analysis is described. Thereby, the sensor locations in the BEM reflect the test setup and the acceleration responses obtained from the simulation are compared to the acoustic qualification test results of the S/C.
Secondly, the sensitivity of this approach to simulation parameters is evaluated with respect to solution CPU time and quality on the basis of an isolated panel test. Conclusions are drawn about the capability of the method to establish a BEM for a fully coupled acoustic analysis with reasonable effort and optimized solution time. This enables predictions on random loads for all types of equipment during the entire design phase.
