High strength steel in car structure: How to improve spot welding, assembly and crash performance
While the weight saving potential of advanced materials – such as aluminum, high strength steels, and composites – is widely known, production difficulties and high costs prevent their extensive usage for the entire car body. Utilizing the most appropriate material for each application and component shows to be the most efficient lightweight strategy. However the adaptation of each part design and their assembly, while ensuring the performance of the multi-material assembled component is very challenging. Virtual prototyping can support optimal lightweight design with the latest advances in joining technologies, with the capability to predict the performances of the multi-material component. As lightweight isthe target, no over engineering or excessive margin can be taken.
