Reach and Access Virtual Product Review with VARJO-XR3 in IC.IDO
Aerospace & Defense, Ground Transportation, Heavy Industry & Machinery
Using IC.IDO with OpenXR depth sensing and compositing in the Varjo-XR3 does not replace the need to do quantified and objective measurements, with documentation, for human factors requirements like reachability, accessibility, visibility, and other interactions with new products and process planning.
However, there is tremendous value delivered through the ease with which one can determine IF reach or access might be a challenge. Nothing increases trust and confidence in an engineering decision informed by a personal experience where ones own body is seamlessly integrated with the virtual assets being reviewed. Correlation between the immersed individual's understanding of their own bodies limits and expectations for assembly, production, operating, and maintenance teams is otherwise unobtainable without waiting for physical prototypes or actual production, accelerating product and process delivery timelines.
If reachability is easy and little risk of issue is identified, then perhaps the engineering teams and engineers can spend more time working on already identified issues. Time better spent mitigating other identified issues or identifying additional challenges with the process and product design that might have been overlooked if more time was spent documenting what the XR review might show as trivial.
Will this technology eliminate the need to do 3rd person analytics of additional anthropometries and varied worker populations? NO. But it will ensure that when a study is performed that there should be fewer "surprises" and reduced need to mitigate design and process planning concerns after release for tooling or after line ramp-up begins.
